CourseWriter Author has been designed for ease of use and offers a wealth of features:
- Text in any language, font, size, or colour. Full alignment facilities, word wrap etc.
- Graphics created with CourseWriter's own tools or imported from image libraries - from simple line drawings to full-screen, photographic quality images.
- Sound - imported from a library or recorded by you.
- Animation - from the simple movement of any object on the screen to imported routines.
- Digital Video from hard disk or CD-ROM. CourseWriter can also use MPC-compliant video compression/decompression boards.
- Full keyboard, mouse, pen and touch-screen support - including the creation of control buttons and 'hot-spots'.
- Transparent or opaque screen overlays.
- Timers to control the automatic progression of the display or to limit how long the system will wait for an answer from the student.
- Full range of question types - from simple yes/no questions to ordered multiple completion (e.g. pick five from ten and put them in priority order), free response, form fill, and question banks (which can be ordered sequentially, randomly or by difficulty).
- Answers can be tested against given answers, with built-in facilities to accept misspelling, word order, keywords, numeric ranges, etc.
- Printing facilities - while authoring or presenting - allow you to document the course material easily. Print preview is available in the authoring system.
- Command line options to open other applications while running the course.
- Easy to use macro language - for handling those situations where the automatic facilities don't quite fit what you want the system to do.
- Full range of variables - both system and user defined.
- Bookmarks - to allow a student to restart a lesson at any point.
- Scaleable views while authoring - from 75% to 400%.
- Multi-display resolution capability - from standard VGA (640 x 480 pixels) up to the highest resolutions available (currently 1600 x 1200 pixels). You can even create your material in a high-resolution format for presentation at a lower resolution.

- Small footprint - authoring system occupies less than 10 MB of disk space (excluding courseware).
