The CourseWriter System

CourseWriter Manager is the versatile Student and Course Management System that you use to administer your CourseWriter database(s). Manager lets you organise the learning environment to suit your training needs.

Manager comprises a suite of three programs:

Manager's versatility means that it can be deployed in many ways. You could for example, use Administrator on a single system to act as the collection and analysis centre for data returned by remote students. Or you could install all three programs across a network to administer hundreds of students and instructors directly, in real-time.

Manager offers a wealth of features to secure, control, record and report on student and course activity.

Manager supports a complete hierarchy of user types: System Managers, Group Supervisors, Instructors, Authors and Students. Each is granted different access privileges within the CourseWriter system.

Facilities are provided to manage off-line activities such as instructor-led or paper-based lessons as well as on-line CBT-style courses. Manager is normally (but not necessarily) used in tandem with CourseWriter Presenter.

All the Manager programs are implemented in Microsoft Access and are dynamically linked to a CourseWriter database at run-time. Note that if you do not have Microsoft Access already installed, Manager setup will install the Access Runtime System for you.

Manager has been designed to be easily extensible - we will supply the layout of the CourseWriter database to customers on request - so you can add your own routines alongside (or even in place of) CourseWriter Manager. Or if you prefer, CBT Solutions can customise Manager to suit your exact requirements.

Administrator

Use Administrator to configure and manage system elements such as resources, activities, locations, lessons, modules, courses, users, student records and student groups. You can also set up a timetable so that students are only allowed to use the system during set times.

Access to the Administrator menus is granted according to user type - Student, Author, Instructor, Group Supervisor or System Manager.

Once you have created one or more courses (by combining modules and lessons) and enrolled students onto them, you can have the system offer only one on-line lesson at a time to a student. The student must complete each lesson before they are offered the next.

In a networked learning environment, by specifying appropriate resources, activities and locations you can control exactly where and when students are able to access lessons. Student progress can be monitored in real-time, and you can get up to the minute reports of where students are and which activity they are engaged in.

If you are using a distributed learning environment, Administrator has comprehensive facilities for importing and consolidating data from remote students.

Administrator offers many standard reports such as:

If you need any other reports or facilities, Administrator has been designed to be easily extensible - we will supply the layout of the CourseWriter database to customers on request - so you can add your own reports alongside Administrator's. Or if you prefer, we can customise Administrator to suit your exact requirements.

When students have completed their courses, Administrator lets you archive their data - and of course retrieve it later if you need to. Student records are only completely deleted when they are removed from the archive.

Student Registration

The Student Registration program is used in networked learning environments where you need to control students' access to resources and/or track their location and activity.

Typically, you would install the Student Registration program on any PC that will be used directly by students, and in classrooms that will be used for off-line activities - instructor-led lessons for example.

Students use the program to register into or out of a location and activity. The activity must be allowed at the current location but can be on-line or off-line. As the student registers in or out, appropriate records are written to the active CourseWriter database so that they can be tracked in real-time.

If the student chooses an on-line activity, you can configure the Student Registration program to start another program automatically. For example, whenever a student registers in to an activity of CBT, you could have the Student Registration program start Presenter automatically.

If Monitor is also being used, you can configure Monitor to send messages to Instructors, Group Supervisors and System managers if for example, a student should not show any activity on the system for a set time, or if they spend too long in one activity, and so on.

Administrator contains complementary facilities for instructors to register students to activities that are not specific to any location or that are 'out of training'. For example, an off-site activity such as a driving lesson, a dental appointment or an interview. Note that a driving lesson could still be considered 'in training' if it was part of the student's course.

Monitor

Monitor is an optional Manager program used in networked learning environments where you need to closely monitor system status and/or have the system alert you if there are any exceptions in student activity such as:

Monitor is installed on one workstation only - typically the server.

Monitor's display includes information on current system status, what and when the next status change will be and the last exception message generated.

Exception messages broadcast by Monitor are first sent to Instructors. If the message is not dealt with by an Instructor it is escalated to the Group Supervisors and then to the System Manager.
